'The Only Constant is Change, Change is the Only Constant'

This book is not about Constant Nieuwenhuys, the individual. It is about the question what it means to be human, the conviction that each human being is an artist but not every artist a human being, and the desire to co-live in a world liberated from violent boundaries. It is the unapologetically playful finale of the multi-year project Constant 101 (meandering around 2021) that sought to connect Constant’s oeuvre from Cobra to New Babylon to contemporary art in the Netherlands and beyond (Zippora Elders with Fondation Constant).

Playing Constant is itself aimed as a synthetic artwork. It is non-linear, non-hierarchical, non-concrete. Artists were invited to share from their hearts, they were not directed to provide the reader with a simplified image or easily consumable overview of contemporary Constants. The publication consists of fragments full of artists’ expressions spanning the past years, radical imagination, poetic observations and creative responses to Constant’s legacy and therefore to recent history: drawing, painting, design, typography, architecture, music, photography, literature, poetry, theatre, philosophy. It evidently questions Constant’s privileged positionality while embracing his strive for a collectively caring attitude in global society - all the more urgent today!
