+++Marie Reintjes+++
This publication is published on the occasion of the granting of the Sieger White Award to Marie Reintjes in 2024 and of her solo exhibition at Gallery Vriend van Bavink in Amsterdam.
Balancing between abstraction and figuration, Dutch artist Marie Reintjes (b. 1990) paints landscapes, urban scenes, and references to family photo albums. In seemingly simple brushstrokes, she visualizes the essence of an image, evoking an atmosphere of tranquility. With a colour, a mark, a line or a streak, Reintjes transforms places and scenes into spaces of memories. 'I reduce our busy, hectic world to a few brushstrokes and elevate the small, everyday to something grand,' says Marie Reintjes.
Temporary Terrain contains a selection of work from the past ten years. Marie Reintjes is the recipient of the Sieger White Award 2024, a stipend for talented young artists from the eastern Netherlands. Since her graduation from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht in 2013, Reintjes exhibits her work regularly in group exhibitions. In 2022, her Iceland series were shown in an extensive solo presentation at Singer Museum Laren, as part of the Van Vlissingen Prize, for which she was awarded. Reintjes lives and works in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
The Sieger White Award was first awarded in 2012. The award is designated as an encouragement to a young artist aged under 35 from the east of the Netherlands. It consists of the guarantee of a book publication worth €25,000,- on the artist’s work, to be accompanied by an exhibition at a leading art gallery – in the west of the country. Book and exhibition are intended to help a gifted painter who has already developed a modest oeuvre of some standing to take the next step in his or her career.
The award is named after the painter couple Fred Sieger (Amsterdam 1902 – Zevenaar 1999) and his wife Helen White (New York 1911 – Zevenaar 2010).
